Pilot Script, Scene 6: Mr Headman's Office
Finally, we have a scene from the original pilot script that was presented (several times!) to various CSR representatives. Looking back on it, it is surprisingly gentle and old-fashioned, like something out of a 1970s sitcom. It's quite amusing, but with the scripts proper I decided to leave Mr Headman and his dementia in the background.
MR HEADMAN: Right, so, can we just run through this one more time
Maureen?
MAUREEN:(SIGHS) Yes.
MR HEADMAN: So I’m going to give a speech?
MAUREEN: A speech, that’s right Mr Headman.
MR HEADMAN: And it’s to say goodbye . . .
MAUREEN: Hello! It’s to say hello!
MR HEADMAN: Why am I saying hello to them all if they’re leaving?
MAUREEN: They’re not leaving Mr Headman. They’re the new in-take. This is a welcoming
speech.
MR HEADMAN: A welcoming speech, right. And this is for the . . . What are they
again?
MAUREEN: They’re students Mr Headman.
MR HEADMAN: (AS IF THE WORD IS UTTERLY ALIEN) Students? Riiiiight. Hmm. Gosh,
what a lot to remember. And why am I giving them the speech? Encouragement from
a local businessman something like that?
MAUREEN: You’re the Dean of the University Mr Headman.
MR HEADMAN: Good grief! Didn’t I do well? Wait till I tell mother.
MAUREEN: Your mother’s dead Mr Headman.
MR HEADMAN: Is she? Oh, what terrible bad luck. How did that happen, then?
MAUREEN: She died giving birth to you Mr Headman, 65 years ago.
MR HEADMAN: Did she really? Gosh, easy to forget these minor details isn’t it?
Remind me to send a wreath.Okay then. Leave it to me Agnes, everything’s under
control.
