Episode 6 SCENE: A House Party
Episode 3 Scene Eleven - ANSWERPHONE
Episode 2, Scene Eleven - Billy Connolly’s Office
Pilot Script, Scene 6: Mr Headman's Office
The original post-credits scene for episode 3 was an answerphone message from Brian's mother. However, as the episode took shape it became apparent that it should focus more on Geoff Island. Due to the Mother's absence from the rest of the episode, it made little sense to tack her on the end (Geoff's tearful and plaintive song was more apt). This scene does however add a nice extra dimension of sadness to the Mother, as it is stresses that her constant phone calls are symptomatic of her loneliness and lack of purpose now her youngest son has flown the nest. After years of being a parent, she finds she has no-one left to mother. That could have been quite touching.
FX: DIAL TONE,THEN BEEP
MOTHER: Hello Brian. Still haven’t heard from you. I imagine you’re well into
your course by now. How are you? Today I’ve cleaned out the cupboard under the
stairs. It’s one of those jobs I’ve been meaning to do for years. And you just
can’t get round to it when you’ve got kids running round under your feet. So
I thought, now that I’ve got time to clear it out, I really should.
I have so much time to do jobs like that now you’ve gone away. I really
don’t know how I used to fill my days before you went away. I mean today for
instance, I sat and watched Brainteaser for a while, and then Trisha And once
I’d done the laundry and the washing up, it was only midday. I mean, obviously
there’s LESS laundry and washing up than there used to be, but even so. It’s
quite an achievement, I’m sure you agree. Oh and I hoovered in your room. I mean:
in the spare room. Your dad was out in the garage, doing whatever it is he does
in the garage. I must ask him one of these days.
And I went to Mrs Bucklewhit's, to see how she was. But no-one answered,
so I suppose she must still be in Blackpool. Mr Wazeem, the newsagent enquired
after you. I told him that I hadn’t actually heard from you, but that I was sure
you were doing fine.
Oh, I’ve noticed that the weather’s been very good for you these past few
days apart from a couple of showers yesterday. It’s been pretty overcast here.
Well, give me a ring when you get a chance I won’t be up to much in particular,
no doubt. You won’t be interrupting me especially. I’ll probably just be sitting
on the sofa. Maybe reading the paper. Maybe just staring. Bye love, bye Brian.
Love you.
